This work presents a laboratory experiment for undergraduate and graduate students that introduces colloidal-crystal concepts through the growth of thin films from a latex colloidal solution in a wedge cell. Varying the cell thickness produces microcrystals with different structures and orientations, which are characterized from top-view and edge-view scanning electron microscopy images.
